Equipment

Practice Attire

It is strongly recommended you use a previous year’s racing suit (or a cheap racing suit from Dick’s, Academy, or Amazon.com) as a practice suit and NOT board shorts and t-shirts. This is especially important for younger swimmers. The reasoning behind this is simply leisure swimsuits typically hinder performance and growth in the water. For girls, a two piece where straps have to be adjusted and bottoms have to constantly be pulled up take the focus off proper technique. Board shorts and swim shirts may be great for the beach and recreational swim with friends, but they are a disaster for those learning proper stroke technique. Basically the excess fabric acts like a parachute behind the swimmer, making kicking difficult, and causing problems during the recovery in the arms. While we do not require you purchase additional racing suits for your swimmer, it is STRONGLY recommended by all of the coaching staff.

As for goggles and swim caps, we always like practicing with goggles. If you have longer hair, we would also use a swim cap to help control it. Being able to see where you are going in the water can make a world of difference to a beginning and advanced swimmer. A decent pair of racing goggles will also last several years and stay on the swimmer’s face (unlike the cheap things from Walmart and Target). The Speedo Hydrospex are great for the new swimmer. They are larger and very comfortable on the face. For a more advanced swimmer, we recommend the Speedo Vanquisher. Both are a little more expensive than the Walmart brand, but having straps that stay on and tight make them 100% worth the money. Any swim cap is fine and they come in latex and silicone styles.

Meet Attire

The Forest Oaks team suit is required for swim meets.  We will use the same suit every year, so if it still fits - reuse it!  Be aware though, the material does deteriorate after use, so check to see if the suits have holes or are see through.  New suits may be purchased from TheSwimTeamStore.com.  If you are prompted for an ID and Password, use ID: ForestOaks / password: swim.  Please note that any order placed after May 10 cannot be guaranteed by the first swim meet.  For suit sizing information, please refer to to www.kiefer.com/blog/competitive-swimwear-sizing-guide-tips.
